Root Canal

Tooth pain and sensitivity can be a sign of infection that, when left untreated, can cause serious oral health complications.

A root canal can eliminate the infection while preserving the tooth structure.

Learn how Dr. Ramsey E. Wilson in Collins, MS, can perform root canal treatment to protect your tooth and restore your oral health.

What Is a Root Canal?

A root canal is a dental procedure in which your dentist removes decay from a tooth and infected pulp from the pulp chamber. This infection occurs when untreated cavities or cracks in a tooth allow bacteria to enter the pulp chamber and infect the pulp. Following root canal treatment, a dental crown is usually placed to protect the tooth.

We Perform Comfortable Root Canals

It's a popular misconception that root canals are painful, but root canal treatment is meant to alleviate pain and discomfort. When done properly, you should not feel any pain during your root canal, as your dentist will numb the area before he begins. It's important to communicate with your dentist if you feel any discomfort during your treatment so he can make adjustments to ensure your comfort. For those who require an extra level of care or for patients with dental anxiety, we offer sedation options. Our Collins, MS, dental practice wants to make your dental experience as comfortable as possible.

Root Canal Treatment

Consultation

During your initial consultation with Dr. Wilson, he will examine your mouth and discuss your oral health history. He may also take X-rays to determine if a root canal is the correct treatment for you. In the days leading up to your procedure, you may be instructed to take antibiotics. This can help ensure a successful outcome by reducing infection and swelling.

Local Anesthesia

Before your dentist begins your root canal treatment, he will numb the area using local anesthesia. This will keep you comfortable during treatment and ensure you do not feel any pain.

Root Canal

Once you are comfortable, your dentist will create a small opening in the tooth that will allow him to reach the pulp. Dr. Wilson will remove the infected blood vessels, nerves, and other connective tissues and thoroughly clean the inside of the tooth. The pulp chamber and root canals will be reshaped and filled with a biocompatible material to completely seal the root canals. A filling may be placed to seal the opening.

Crown Placement

A crown will need to be placed to protect and restore the tooth to full function. We can sometimes place crowns on the same day as root canal therapy, but this will depend on the case. Once your crown has been crafted, our dentist will bond it to the tooth, and your treatment is complete.

Take a Closer Look at How a Root Canal Is Performed

Our dentist will remove the decay caused by bacteria and make a small hole to access the pulp chamber. The infected pulp is removed, the root canals are reshaped, and the space is filled.

Shouldn't I See an Endodontist for a Root Canal?

You don't have to. Though endodontists specialize in treating problems that affect the tooth pulp, Dr. Wilson has experience performing effective root canal therapy, too. In addition to root canals, Dr. Wilson can provide you with any other treatments you may need to restore your oral health. If you require additional treatment, such as having a cavity filled, you won't have to visit both a dentist and an endodontist. You can simply request an appointment with our Collins, MS, dentistry practice to receive the comprehensive care you need.

Why Dentists Perform Root Canals Instead of Extraction

Patients sometimes wonder why they should receive a root canal instead of tooth extraction. Tooth loss can cause jawbone atrophy, as the jaw no longer receives the stimulation that the tooth roots once provided. This causes the surrounding teeth to shift out of place. Replacing the tooth to prevent this problem would require a dental implant, which is a costly dental solution.

A root canal allows your dentist to preserve the tooth structure and eliminate the infection while allowing you to keep your tooth. An extraction is only recommended when the tooth is severely damaged or decayed.

Affordable Financing Available

At our Collins, MS, dentistry practice, we accept all insurances, including CHIP and Medicaid. For those without insurance or to help cover out-of-pocket costs, we accept CareCredit® which offers low or no interest payment plans.
